FEP Resin Products offer flexibility and are designed to enhance coatings, melt extrusions, and impregnation. These fluorinated ethylene propylene resins come in pellet form and work with conventional melt-extrusion techniques and injection-, compression-, transfer-, and blow-molding processes.
A high melt strength and drawdown capacity facilitates the use of large dies and drawdown tooling to increase production rates. Using larger length-over-diameter extruder barrels provides sufficient residence time at high production rates to melt these high-temperature polymers. Reciprocating screw injection-molding machines are most effective, and manufacturers should use corrosion-resistant metals for any equipment contacting molten resin.
The properties of FEP products make them the preferred solution for various industrial applications and processing techniques, supporting industrial manufacturing by:
FEP resins offer excellent chemical resistance and electrical properties while functioning at high service temperatures up to 200°C (392°F). They provide unique flame resistance and best-in-class low-temperature toughness. FEP is also available as a coating, film, or dispersion.
DuPont FEP 9475 is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene without additives that meets ASTM D 2116 type II requirements. With a relatively high melt flow rate and excellent electrical properties, it has been specifically designed for high-speed extrusion of thin coatings on small-gauge wires for twisted-pair constructions.
This resin provides the electrical and mechanical properties needed for low voltage applications and has a higher melt flow rate than most other fluoroplastic resins, permitting higher extrusion speeds and easier processing. FEP 9475 is designed to have improved dissipation factor at high frequencies and significant plate-out resistance in melt extrusion.
It is suitable as a solid insulator and as a foamed insulator when used with an appropriate nucleant in a nitrogen gas injection process.
FEP 9475 is used when traditional extrusion and molding processes are required for producing products with superior fluoroplastic resin properties. Compared to other thermoplastics, the high melt strength and thermal stability of FEP 9475 can improve processing rates. Compared with other fluoroplastics, creep resistance at high service temperatures provides superior balance and level of end-use properties.
FEP 9475 combines the processing ease of conventional thermoplastics with properties similar to polytetrafluoroethylene. Properly processed products provide superior characteristics including chemical inertness, exceptional dielectric properties, heat resistance, toughness and flexibility, low coefficient of friction, non-stick characteristics, negligible moisture absorption, low flammability, performance at temperature extremes, and excellent weather resistance.
In flame situations, products of FEP 9475 resist ignition and do not promote flame spread. When ignited by flame from other sources, their heat contribution is minimal and added slowly with very little smoke.
